Probation officers perform many duties, most of which fall under two categories. The first is to conduct investigations and prepare written reports for the Court. These reports provide the sentencing judge with detailed information about the offender, the offense, and the effects of the crime on the victim. This information allows the Judge to determine the most appropriate sentence for the offender.
Secondly, probation officers provide supervision by monitoring an offender’s conduct and providing positive guidance. Offenders must comply with the rules of their probation and follow directives of their probation officer. The goals of the supervision process are to protect the community and to help the offender make positive changes in their life.
Enhanced services are provided to DUI offenders, drug offenders, sex offenders and domestic violence offenders. These cases receive increased supervision and services. Additionally, they are subject to more frequent breath and urinalysis testing to detect the use of any illegal or unauthorized substances.
