Job Title:
Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Division:
Women Infants and Children (WIC) program

Experience Required:
A woman of the community, with similar characteristics (i.e., race, age, cultural ethnicity, education, and socioeconomic level) of WIC participants. The applicant must have breastfed at least one baby within the last 5 years.

Description of Job Activities:
• The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor(BFPC) should work principally in the WIC clinic setting.
• Promotes breastfeeding and acts as an advocate in the clinic and in the community
• Talks with women individually or in groups about breastfeeding and answer basic questions about breastfeeding.
• Provides anticipatory guidance to help women prepare for their hospital experience and the first few days, weeks, and months of breastfeeding.
• Provides information on the effects of foods, medications, home remedies on lactation within her scope of practice and Department policy and local agency procedure.
• Documents all contacts/conversations with participants.
• Refers participants to the appropriate staff as indicated by local agency procedure
• Establishes relationships with WIC pregnant women and follows-up with them throughout their pregnancy and post-partum.
• Establishes relationships and follows-up with WIC breastfeeding moms, based on the schedule, for the duration of breastfeeding.
• Identifies and assists in recruiting and training additional candidates for BFPC training
• Assists in providing in-service or training session for other health care workers
• Attend and provide in-service training and meetings as required by the Adams County Health Department.

• Ability to work with and serve diverse community populations.
• Ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to use a personal computer
• Provide services in a variety of settings including medical community, the participants’ homes, community centers faith institutions and retail establishments
